Objective:To investigate the effect of beta-alanine supplementation on antioxidant capacity of skeletal muscle of rats, for providing the theoretical basis of the new sports nutrition supplements in the future.Method:40 healthy eight-week-old male SD rats were randomly divided into four groups:exercise plus high dose (Group A),exercise plus moderate dose of β-alanine (Group B), exercise plus water (Group C) and quietness control group (Group D). There are 10 rats in each group, and the research lasts for 4 weeks. Beta-alanine was fed to rats by gavage at 1.5g/kg bw of group A and lg/kg bw of group B, the rats of group C and group D were fed with water by gavage of 1g/kg bw. Choosing high-intensity treadmill exercise for group A, B, C:the speed of the treadmill is 50m/min, run for 6 minutes then rest for 5 minutes. Take this exercise totally 3 times per day and 6 days per week. The content of carnosine of gastrocnemius, the activity of SOD, GSH-PX and the content of MDA,4-HNE of gastrocnemius and the content of ROS, SDH, FOF1-ATP enzyme and ATP, ADP, AMP of mitochondria were measured at the end.Results:1)Compared with Group C, the content of carnosine of Group B increased significantly (p<0.05). Compared with Group C, the content of carnosine of Group A increased significantly (p<0.01).2)Compared with Group D, there is no distinct difference in the indexes in Group C.3)Compared with Group C,the activity of SOD and GSH-PX of both Group A and Group B increased significantly (p<0.01), the content of 4-HNE both decreased significantly (p<0.01), the content of MDA of Group B decreased significantly (p<0.01).4)Compared with Group A,the content of carnosine of Group B increased significantly (p<0.05), the content of 4-HNE decreased significantly (p<0.01).5)Compared with Group C, the content of ROS in Group B decreased significantly (p<0.01), the activity of SDH and FOF1-ATPase increased significantly (p<0.01), the activity of SDH and FOF1-ATPase in Group A increased significantly (p<0.05).6) In all of the four groups, there is no distinct difference in the level of ATP, ADP and AMP, but Group B still improved.Conclusion:1)Four weeks beta-alanine supplementation could significantly increase the content of carnosine of rats with exercise.2)Four weeks beta-alanine supplementation could significantly improve the antioxidant capacity of skeletal muscle of rats with exercise and exercise plus moderate dose is more significant.
