Given that reading is one of the most important cognitive activities, reading issues have always served as the focus for language educators both theoretically and practically. English reading is becoming increasingly significant in the second language education, because it is an essential language skill and an important pathway of language input.Narrow reading is a reading model concept given by Krashen and it gives new enlightenment to the English reading education. The scholars from abroad have done a series of researches on narrow reading while the domestic scholars have done few researches. Empirical researches are even less, not to mention the application of this reading model on senior high school students.This thesis focuses on the application and influence of narrow reading on senior one high school students. Several issues have been discussed as follows: firstly, the influence of the narrow reading on their reading interests; secondly, the influence of narrow reading on their reading confidence; thirdly, the influence of narrow reading on their reading habits; last, the influence of narrow reading on their reading techniques.This thesis adopts the experimenting method, and the object is the 96 students of two parallel classes from an exemplary senior high school in Qinzhou, Guang Xi province. At the early stage, it uses the document analysis method to explore background of the narrow reading and its theoretical basis. Then the empirical approach is used to verify the function of narrow reading on senior one of high school. Lastly, the result is combined with the data analysis by means of SPSS19.The result indicates that(1) The application of narrow reading can boost the students’ reading interests(2) Students’ reading confidence can be raised(3) The application of narrow reading can cultivate student’s reading habits(4) The application of narrow reading can strengthen students’ awareness of using reading techniques.The experiment sheds light upon English teaching that narrow reading should been advocated among high schools. During extracurricular reading guidance, teacher should stimulate students’ reading interests and help them to choose the appropriate reading materials. Moreover, teacher should design some activities to motivate students’ schema and to arise their attention to the lexical repetition as well as to expand the related background knowledge.
