The modernization of citizen is the premise of national modernization. The modernization process of human being essentially is the acceptance of civic education, that is to cultivate qualified citizens who are equipped with modern civic awareness and seek truth, goodness, reality, and beauty. However, currently there is no specialized civic education curriculum in school curriculum system, civic education is usually implemented by discipline penetration, in particular through the social studies curriculum. Due to the nature of discipline and teaching goals of junior high school’s history textbooks, the history course becomes the main discipline that carries out civic education. History bears the responsibility to teach civic knowledge and develop students’civic awareness.This study attempts to analyze the content of civic knowledge about history textbooks from the perspective of civic education. According to the value pursuit of foreign civic knowledge and our socialist core values, we clarify civic knowledge into world civic knowledge, patriotic knowledge, dedicated knowledge, honest knowledge and friendliness knowledge. In this paper, the content analysis method is adopted to comprehensively and in-depth analyze the civic knowledge that’s covered in junior high school history textbooks; through the analysis on characteristics and defects of the civic education content, then some optimization recommendations are provided.In the preface, the author elaborates the reason, significance and research status at home and abroad on this topic. The second part provides the detailed definition of related concepts such as citizens, civic education, civic knowledge and civic knowledge education, and sorts out the relationship between civic education and civic knowledge education. The third part according to the value pursuit of foreign civic knowledge and our socialist core values, we clarify civic knowledge into the world civic knowledge, patriotic knowledge, dedicated knowledge, honest knowledge and friendliness knowledge.The fourth part uses content analysis to deeply analyze the knowledge of civic education content in junior high school history textbooks, to understand how much civic knowledge in history textbooks, then to analyze the proportion of the world citizen knowledge, patriotic knowledge, dedicated knowledge, honest knowledge and friendliness knowledge accounting in text, illustrations, catchphrase and other carriers and how they presented in textbooks. The fifth part summarizes the characteristics and defects of civic knowledge education in junior high school history textbooks and proposes optimization measures for its shortcomings. Studies have found that the characteristics of civic knowledge education are rich and comprehensive, positive and negative combined, humanity and implicitness, but also shown that it strengthens political ideology education, fade moral education, the content tends to be simple and surface. In order to optimize the educational content, the history textbooks should systemically deepen civic knowledge educational content, and the presentation of educational content should be detailed slightly proper. In the end, the author conducts a comprehensive summary for the full text.
