The new curriculum reform abandons the traditional concepts of reading instruction and advocates teachers to focus on the personalization and creativity in students’reading, and the initiatives and spiritual world of students. In the process of applying individualized reading instruction into practice, students indeed have exerted their initiatives, but there also exists some problems to be solved, such as over-interpretation of the text and the lack of teachers" guidance. So, how to enrich the understanding of individualized reading instruction? How to make the personalized reading instruction better? "The Horizon of expectation" provides some theoretical methods and ideas to solve these problems. The Horizon of expectation" is the core of the theory of Reception Aesthetics, which emphasizes the importance of different readers’horizon of expectations in reading instruction and considers the meaning of the text as uncertain. The readers are both recipients of the text and creators of external meaning of the text. They always interpret the text with their own "pre-construction" which constitutes of their own experience and literature vision. Therefore, we must underscore the central position of readers and their insights in reading instruction. This concept is in accordance with individualized reading instruction advocated by new curriculum reform. Meanwhile, "the Horizon of expectation" also emphasizes that individualized interpretation should follow the text to get a deeper understanding.Under the guidance of "’The Horizon of expectation", this thesis combines insights from questionnaires and classroom observations to discuss personalized reading instruction from the following three aspects. Firstly, enlightened by horizon of expectations theory, we discuss the three characteristics of individualized reading instruction, namely, aesthetic experience, fusion of horizons and implication constructive. Secondly, starting from the perspectives of the authors, text, teachers and students, we build a schematic overview of individualized reading instruction under the guidance of the horizon of expectations. With the meaning as the center, this thesis analyzes the meaning given by the author but hidden in the text, the restriction of language in reflecting the author’s meaning, and the horizon of expectation of readers that changes in the process of accepting and exploring the meaning and implication of the text. Thirdly, based on the schematic overview of individualized reading instruction under the horizon of expectations, this thesis builds another Schematic diagram which identifies three-level reading in constructing the implications of text, including the aesthetic perception of the integral reading (the first level), reading integrated with meaning and deep thinking (the second level), and the implicative and constructive reading integrated with history (the third level). The schematic overview of individualized reading instruction under the horizon of expectations and the three-level reading instruction provide the teachers with effective references for a better implementation in the individualized reading instruction in the specific practice, rise the students’individualized perception and understanding sufficiently in the blank, follow the prescription of the text in order to avoid students over-interpreting the text and realize the improvement of the individualized reading instruction.Based on those, we propose some strategies to enhance the quality of personalized reading instruction, such as extending the horizon of expectations, creating situational expectations, building a platform for dialogue, following the logic of the text, defining different roles and facing expected frustration correctly. Finally, I take the text "A View of the Back" wrote by Ziqing Zhu as an example and add my own reviews so that readers can have a better understanding and grasp the concept of the horizon of expectations as well as its implementations and operations in personalized reading instruction. The theory of the horizon of expectation provides the personalized reading instruction with methods and thought. However, teachers along with students are supposed to make no efforts to improve the effect of the personalized reading instruction if we intend to implement the horizon of expectation into the personalized reading instruction.
