Application-oriented disciplines which are aimed at applying theories of advanced science and technology to social production practices take on the formidable tasks of practical technology research and applied talents cultivation to meet the pressing needs of economic reform and transition for scientific and technological innovations, developments and applications. As the principal of technical innovation and talent training, the graduate tutors, especially those who focus on applied research directions, are undoubtedly becoming the crucial factors in accomplishing the strategical mission. Their professional practical ability links theories and practices effectively as a bridge and acts as the key to the effectiveness of scientific achievements conversion and the quality of graduate cultivation, especially to the graduates’ practice and employment ability. However, professional practical ability is actually discounted in the selection, training, evaluation and motivation of graduate tutors in these disciplines. With Dialectical Relationship between Theory and Practice, Grey Correlation Theory and Asymmetric Information Game Theory as the theoretical basis, this thesis takes applied economics as an example, completes a questionnaire focusing on the development of the professional practical ability of graduate tutors in applied economics and analyzes the problems existing in developing that ability of graduate tutors in application-oriented disciplines. Then based on the results of Grey Relational Analysis on the actual force of different sorts of contributory factors in the practical ability improvement, the thesis proposes that the thought of “operating target”-“intermediate target”-“ultimate goal” should be followed. With the “management” of external factors like the policies and institutions, the tutors would draw attention to their professional practical ability and take actions seriously to improve it, afterwards the ultimate goal of effectively developing such ability might be achieved. In the last part, five aspects of targeted proposals and policies are put forward. With due respect for the tutors, the authors endeavors to research the development of graduate tutors’ professional practical ability in the perspective of a student. Invaluable help and advice from many graduate tutors in application-oriented disciplines alleviate the problems of student’s research capacity limitation. Mature methods and theories are used to draw a convincing conclusion. Nevertheless, further researches and improvements are in desperate need.
