Since 2011, China has started mainland Xinjiang secondary vocational classes in 31 national key secondary vocational schools of nine central provinces and municipalities such as Tianjin, Liaoning and Shanghai. It was aimed at cultivating professional talents to meet the urgent demand of economic and social development in Xinjiang. Shanghai’s vocational education has been developed well, so it is of great significance to explore the mainland Xinjiang secondary vocational classes by taking this city as an example. As Xinjiang students grow up in their own culture, they will be shocked by huge cultural differences when they come to Shanghai, a bustling metropolis. They will experience great change in various aspects of society including space, environment, people, geography, climate, clothing and diet. Therefore, the paper will make a thorough investigation into their cultural adaptation based on three Xinjiang classes in Shanghai to improve all the Xinjiang secondary vocational classes. The paper is completed by literature study, questionnaire and interview. After analyzing related study of cultural adaptation at home and abroad, the author finishes the research framework. By a questionnaire of 565 Xinjiang students in Shanghai secondary vocational school, the author knows how well they have adapted to the new culture. The author gets a better understanding of the problems through interviews with administers, teachers and students. The paper consists of four chapters:Firstly, the introduction covers the background and meanings, analyzes the literature of mainland classes and cultural adaptation, and defines the core concepts. Secondly, the design and implementation of investigation will explain the details of Xinjiang students’cultural adaptation in Shanghai secondary vocational school. Thirdly, the paper describes the current situation of students’cultural adaptation. Fourthly, according to experience and problems, we put forward countermeasures to promote Xinjiang students’ cultural adaptation in Shanghai secondary vocational schools. Besides, we have an additional part to sum up and look ahead. The difficulty faced by students when adapting to a new culture and their personal attitudes are main factors we consider, thus we give advice on further research to overcome shortcomings of this study. The conclusions are as follows:(1) Most students have adapted to the new culture well, but there are still some significant differences in demography variables. It is much more difficult for male students to adapt than female students; Southern Xinjiang students than northern Xinjiang; Uighur students than other minorities; Min kao min students than min kao han students and Han nationality students; students in primary Chinese level than those in high Chinese level. In conclusion, schools need to focus on male, southern Xinjiang, Uyghur, min kao min students and students in primary Chinese level and help them better adapt to new culture. (2) In general, those Xinjiang students show more obvious tendency to integrate than to assimilate, separate and marginalize their culture. In demography variables, they have significant differences toward cultural adaptation. (3) We have also found that the attitude of Xinjiang students towards a new culture is related to their adaptation. The higher tendency of separating, marginalizing and assimilating their culture students have, the worse they are accustomed to the new one. The higher tendency of integrating, the better they adapt to the new culture.
