The Research On The Structure Of Academic Organization System And Operation Mode Of British Research University

As a major institution that equipped with teaching, scientific research and social service, university academic organization is of the utmost significance to the development of universities. The research on the academic organization maintains the focus of the academic research that aiming to improve the efficiency and effect of the operation of universities along with the quality of teaching and scientific research. Meanwhile, the research on the academic organization can meet the dynamic needs of the country and its universities. In this paper, the structure and operation mode of academic organization will be research emphasis.In current research, the research on the academic organization of American research universities is most popular and the same research on other counties has been ignored. It is known that universities originated in Europe in Middle Ages and Britain established first English university. Nowdays, the number of the world class university in Britain is second to that in America. The unique academic organization system of British research universities have been imitated and reformed by the universities in other countries has a far-reaching significance.In this paper, the academic organization system of British research universities will be investigated and discussed..Firstly, the category of British research universities is defined. Through survey on the ranking of British universities of the Thames in 2014, The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008 and comprehensive characteristics of research universities, we choose "Russell University Group" which is the typical representative of British research universities as the research object. Then, concept of academic organization is introduced. Academic organization is the official organization established inside the university. Its main task is processing academic affairs and its main methods are processing the profound knowledge, doing research and spread them.Secondly, organization management theory and the classification of organization are proposed. The characteristics of 3 typical organization (bureaucracy structure, department structure and matrix structure) are clarified, which lay the foundation of the classification of academic organization structure research.Thirdly, we describe the background of the development of the academic organization of British research universities since 12th century. The evolution of academic organization is concluded from dynamic perspective. This provides the foundation of the conclusion of academic organization characteristics and cause analysis.In the fourth part, the structure and operation mode of upper, middle and bottom academic organization is elaborated via analyzing the status quo of academic organization system of the 24 universities of Russell Group. Besides, a clear division of the same layer organization and explain of the difference between the organizations using the same name are made.In the fifth part, we conduct analysis and argument of the operation of bureaucracy structure, department structure and matrix structure of Birmingham University, London University and Cambridge University. Moreover, the characteristics,advantages and disadvantages of each kind of structure are analyzed combing with organization management thought.Finally, Conclusion and thinking of the whole characteristics and cause of British research universities are conducted. Then, we draw the inspiration from the work above.
