The extracurricular reading is the important way to improve students’ reading ability, comprehensive quality and spiritual growth. Strengthening students’ extra-curricular reading has become one of the most important requirements of the new curriculum reform. Especially, they need more extra-curricular reading to enrich their heart and mold their temperament for the boarding primary school students who are contact with family and society rarely because of unified management. However, the situation of their extracurricular reading is not satisfactory Affected by many factors. Therefore, it has realistic significance to study the issue of boarding primary school students’ extracurricular reading.This research mainly adopts questionnaire survey and individual interviews to study the strategies of optimizing boarding primary school students’ extracurricular reading from the operation level. This paper firstly conducts a survey on the present reality of boarding primary school students’ extracurricular reading from four dimensions of reading orientation and objective, habits and methods, scope and contents, and effect and the quality, and analyses and sums up the results of them as well.Based on it, this paper summarizes problems and their main reasons of boarding primary school students’ extracurricular reading as follows: unclear reading purpose and poor consciousness, narrow reading range and strong utilitarianism, less reading time and reading inadequate, and bad reading habit and improper reading methods. According to all this, this paper put forward five strategies of optimizing boarding primary school students’ extracurricular reading as follows: shifting the focus and returning to the ontological value of extracurricular reading, creating the reading atmosphere and cultivating the reading intrinsic interest, stressing on reading methods and cultivating self-reading ability, coordinating various links and making use of the linkage effect between school and family, expanding the reading channels and improving construction and use of reading resources. Finally, this paper detects the effect of using these five strategies and the results show that the efficiency of students’ reading are improved and benefits of extracurricular reading are demonstrated preliminarily.
