English Reading is an essential language skill for students to learn English in senior high school. Reading takes up a large proportion in the exam. In the long term, the traditional teaching methods of English reading are dominated by the teacher and the concept of examination-oriented, grammar and vocabulary-based. However, Cooperative Learning is a teaching method in which students work together in groups to accomplish their shared tasks assigned by the teacher. Cooperative Learning is regarded as one of the teaching methods applied widely at home and abroad. This is complied with the New Standard of English Curriculum, which advocates students’ experience, practice, participation and cooperation in teaching activities.The research reviews the relevant literature on English reading and Cooperative Learning. It analyzes the present teaching situations of English reading in senior high school, and also discussed the mode of Cooperative Learning in English reading class. The subjects are 96 students from two classes in Senior 2 in Tongliao No. 5 Senior High School. The author introduces the teaching design and procedure in details. The conclusion of the research is that Cooperative Learning is more effective than traditional methods. It not only improves students’ reading achievements but also enhances their interest in English reading class. Thus improving students’ reading ability. In a word, Cooperative Learning is suitable for English reading class. Therefore, it is worthwhile to do further study on Cooperative Learning.
