The sports school affiliated to sports university of higher education is an important base for nurturing and training of high-level reserve sports talents. Chinese is a fundamental and compulsory course for students in competitive sports schools. Chinese learning along with the cultivation of Chinese attainments lays a foundation in student athletes’growth and development. By investigating and analyzing the current situation of Chinese learning and the cultivation of Chinese attainments among young athletes in Sports School Attached to Wuhan Institute of Physical Education, this article aims at exploring methods and strategies of Chinese language teaching reform as well as making an attempt on cultural education reform for young athletes who are facing the dilemma of learning and training.This article includes three chapters. In the first chapter, by using questionnaires, interviews and other research methods, the author makes a scientific investigation on course design in sports schools, teachers’ background, students’ learning situation as well as students’ ability about reading, writing, oral communication and other aspects. The investigation shows that Chinese course in sports schools has sufficient class hours but lacks target with regard to teaching goals, content and methods; Chinese teachers have decent academic background and titles, but they seldom communicate with peers and local education authorities, thus it’s difficult for them to renew their ideas; student athletes have weak cultural knowledge foundation and are not good at reading, writing, oral communication and so on, because they put most of their time in training and competitions, sometimes they even escape or give up study.In the second chapter, the author does a deeper analysis from three aspects including students, teachers and educational environment to find out the factors that affect Chinese learning and Chinese attainments cultivation of students in sports schools. Students in sports school are outgoing, competitive and eager for victory, with much of their attention and interests focused on sports. They usually have strong emotional bias and have not formed a sense of values. They also disregard cultural lessons and take a poor attitude towards study. Deviation of the "combination of sports and teaching" model from its original intention and shortage of education funding have caused problems like the teaching faculty construction falls behind, teaching facilities do not reach standards, which will severely restrain the actual effects of cultural education among athletes.In the third chapter, the author, based on years of teaching practice, proposes some strategies of Chinese attainments cultivation for students in sports schools:1. To set clear Chinese course goals and compile proper textbooks and reference books.2. To strengthen the cultivation of Chinese attainments by focusing on classroom teaching and reading teaching. Chinese teachers should change their concepts and improve their teaching methods to help students cultivate emotions, train thinking and accumulate language usages through reading. They should also help students enhance the writing, speaking, listening and communication skills through reading so that reading, writing and oral communication teaching will complement each other to improve the overall effectiveness of classroom teaching.3. To perfect teaching assessment system. Use student assessment of teachers’ classroom teaching and teacher assessment of students’ school work to motivate teachers’ teaching enthusiasm and students’ learning enthusiasm. Guide and control teaching process to help student athletes improve Chinese attainments as well as master learning methods and develop a good learning habit, which will make students to proactively learn every cultural course and get comprehensive development.
