With the evolution of education system from 1902 to 1922, this thesis is based on text analysis of two primary Chinese textbooks of commercial press, focusing on primary school students’ studying and teachers’ teaching in the late Qing dynasty and early period of the republic of China. In order to study the primary school textbook and didactics changing with the evolution of education system and how the changing influence the students’ intellectual structure. Through text analysis, primary school education changed the educational goal from training the Chinese traditional scholars to shaping modern national people. In another word, along with the abolition of the imperial examination system and educational system promulgated, Chinese education’s goal changed and treated developing ordinary citizens’ consciousness of independence as the most important tasks. Meanwhile, the two sets of textbooks in different periods did not completely westernize. Not only introducing the modern western thought, but also preserving the traditional moral principles of feudal period in China. The textbooks were the carrier of knowledge which was selected by people of that period. Through the teaching and learning, the textbooks’ content was absorbed and became parts of intellectual structure. |
