The sense of shame is a peculiar moral feeling of human beings and an important part of traditional Chinese and western virtues. It has the functions of guidance, regulation and inspiration, and used to be of significant importance in the moral formation of Chinese people,In consideration of prominent problems in fundamental civilization and hierarchy of morality in China, it’s very necessary to emphasize the fundamental sense of shame.The fundamental sense of shame refers to a negative emotional experience an individual has about himself or herself, such as disrepute, disgrace or self-accusation, when one realizes that his or her thoughts and behaviors are going against the basic moral characters and code of conduct commonly valued and recognized to be owned by every member of the society. It has the following characters:unification of fundamentality and universality, high sociality, uniformity of self-discipline and heteronomy, etc. The fundamental sense of shame is the basic condition for one to settle down, and it’s the starting point to fulfill the socialist concept of honor and disgrace and psychological basis of improving socialist morals and ethics.In the life of college students commonly exist the phenomena of lack, neglect and perversion of the sense of shame, which will lead to stagnation of individuals and tarnish the overall image of college students. These phenomena also affect campus atmosphere and the sound development of education to a large extent. It is urgent to conduct education on the fundamental sense of shame for college students.The problem of the fundamental sense of shame among college students has its source in individuals’psychological states, and also is directly related to failure in cultivation goals, lack of external supervision and fomentation in society. The ideological and political education in college should base on fostering students’right moral cognition, self-examination and adoption of others’advices. The systematism of supervision and evaluation on fundamental civilized behavior should be conducted to separate and eliminate the negative effects in society. Themed education focusing on the sense of shame, effective guidance of students’ self-examination, and the positive effects of criticism in social life transferring to college will all contribute to the cultivation of the fundamental sense of shame for college students.
