In the past few years, practice (practicum) teaching as an indispensible part ofteaching and education system in the higher vocational education (HVE) has played avery important and irreplaceable role in developing the students’ professional abilitiesand skills, improving their professionalism and expertise, and cultivating theirinnovation capabilities with the rapid development of HVE in China. However, thereare still some deep-seated problems such as focusing on imparting theories and ignoringpractice and application,knowledge-oriented other than skills and competence-orientedteaching. Some of the reasons are that many higher vocational colleges and institutes areborn of or upgraded from technical secondary schools, that there are no systematiceducation and evaluation measures in HVE and that management are not able toeffectively control and promote the quality of practice teaching. The HVE sustainabledevelopment will be impeded if these problems remain unresolved. Therefore, establishing, improving and perfecting the quality management system of practiceteaching in these colleges and institutes will have a far-reaching effect on thedevelopment of HVE.First, the significances of practice teaching in educating and training students inhigher vocational institutes are emphasized and the concepts and theories related toquality management and assurance systems (QMAS)of practice teaching are illustrated.Second, some achievements of QMAS are summarized, and the problems with QMASand their causes are identified and analyzed. Based on the research in QMAS ofChangzhou Institute and its cases of successful application, are presented the newmodels of constructing QMAS of practice teaching in higher vocational institutes, which offer both special reference and benefits theoretically and realistically to QMAS in higher vocational colleges.
