Faculty governance is the key administration concept in western universities.Dating from Paris University in the middle Ages, it has played a very important rolein the development of the western university. Faculty governance is to manage all thematter in higher institutions by the staff of professor, especially the academic matter.To the19thcentury, most of the European University has materially become universitywhich implements faculty governance. Faculty governance has a history of more thansix hundred years. It has not been eliminated by the changes of The Times. However,with the passage of time, faculty governance is enduring. To the20thcentury,American universities represented by Yale University had been gradually introducingthe faculty governance concept. Combined with the characteristics of its democraticand open, American universities had formed the unique characteristics of theAmerican faculty governance concept, and will the idea as a tradition. Yale Universityas the board of directors system to manage the university, has become the first schoolwhich formed the tradition of faculty governance. Yale University draws the core ideaof European Faculty governance, at the same time, it riches the idea of facultygovernance based on its national conditions. Finally,it has formed Americancharacteristic system of faculty governance.Nowadays,our country is trying to establishing first-class universities in theworld."Faculty governance "as a core concept of governance of western universitybegins to be paid more and more attention by Chinese universities, our universities aretrying to build Chinese characteristic system of faculty governance. Deepened theunderstanding of professor managing idea, the question that need us to think is that tomake our university materially become university which implements facultygovernance. This article selects the problem of Faculty governance of Yale University,researches the implementation of Faculty governance of Yale University. This thesisapplies the research methods of literature analysis and comparative analysis to showthe research of this question, so that we can find something valuable for our university governance.This thesis applies the four parts below to study faculty governancesystematically. It tries to sum up the reasonable model of faculty governance andprovide reference for the implement of faculty governance in China. The first part ofthe article introduces the development of the concept of faculty governance of YaleUniversity. The entire process of Yale University can been divided into four periods:The early of colony college, the growth period of regional university,changed periodof research university and today’s international university. Since the difference ofbackground and environment, Different periods at Yale University, the extent of theimplementation of faculty governance is also differ. The second part introducesthe area of faculty governance of Yale University. The professor of Yale Universityhave the right to participate in the non-academic matter, at the same, they have theright to determine academic matter that is the essence of the faculty governance ofYale university. The third part introduces the of Guarantee conditions of facultygovernance of Yale University: academic freedom, Yale Chapter and tenure.Academic freedom provides environmental security; Yale Chapter provides legalsecurity; tenure is the security systems of faculty governance of Yale University. Thelast part introduces the history of faculty governance in our country and then exploresthe enlightenment of the experiences of faculty governance in Yale University.
