As the new curriculum reform develops, the cultivation of student’s ability training is paid more and more attention to. That process to obtain knowledge and skills should also be the process of ability development has been attached great importance to according to the new curriculum reform. Under the guidance of various kinds of teaching methods, the nurture of students’abilities has been laid stress on by teachers. In the new era, the drawbacks of developing students’ability existing in "Essential Symbol" Pedagogy emerge increasingly. This paper is promoting learner development oriented and through evolving and refining the traditional "Essential Symbol" Pedagogy to achieve the objective of developing students’abilities. Firstly, literature research method is used to carry on objective review of the traditional "Essential Symbol" Pedagogy. Reasons that are not conducive to the students’abilities are analyzed. Secondly, according to its reasons, the improving methods and ways of traditional "Essential Symbol" Pedagogy are put forward under the guidance of new curriculum reformative concept and based on related pedagogy and psychology theories. Then educational experimentation is used to do experiments on the improved "Essential Symbol" Pedagogy. Through statistical treatment of experimental results and analyzing the application effect, the paper gets the conclusion that the improved "Essential Symbol" Pedagogy can effectively improve students’ comprehensive abilities, which has important value for improving the junior high school geography teaching methods, promoting the teaching quality and students’ abilities.
