Myanmar is one of the neighboring countries of China. Long time in history, the two countries have shared a friendly relationship. With the economic take-off and rapid rising international status of China, the Chinese language is also being increasingly learnt by people in other countries. As China and Myanmar have increased their bilateral exchange in terms of economy and trade, Myanmar is now in great need of talents who are good at Chinese and Chinese schools in Myanmar are attracting growing numbers of students. Lashio, a city in northern Myanmar, is one of regions with the most advanced Chinese teaching level in the country and also one of the areas with the largest congregation of the Chinese people. The majority of the Lashio population is made up of the Kokang Chinese, an ethnic group, who harbor deep feelings for China where they have come from and pay much attention to Chinese learning from their childhood. Although the Kokang people are capable of basic communication in Chinese since their childhood, there are still many deviations and errors during their acquisition process of the Chinese language, especially during their acquisition of chinese phonetic alphabets. This paper investigates into the acquisition of finals in Chinese phonetic alphabets by Kokang students in Kowen Language High School of Lashio, north of Myanmar, through approaches including questionnaires, in-class dictation, reading aloud the listening materials, and in-class exercises, in an attempt to gain an insight into the deviations and errors existing in their acquisition of finals so as to propose corresponding solutions and teaching strategies and to finally promote the development of Chinese teaching in northern Myanmar. This paper will consist of five chapters. Chapter1will introduce the objective and significance of the topic in the paper, as well as the status of Chinese teaching in Lashio, a city in northern Myanmar, the origin and the native language of Kokang people. Chapter2will cover the investigation into the acquisition of finals by the students, including the basic information of their Chinese learning history, deviations and errors in reading/writing of the finals and in distinguishing between different finals. Chapter3explains the reasons for these deviations and errors, including front and back nasals, retroflex final "er" and non-retroflex "e", deviations and errors that commonly occur between the following groups:iian vs. On, lip-rounding final u vs. non-lip-rounding final i, in vs. ian,. Chapter4proposes the corresponding solution of biased error;Chapter5proposes five suggestions/strategies with respect to the teaching of finals to the Kokang students. The paper finds that the biggest deviations and errors typical in the acquisition of finals by the Kokang students are:1. Confusion between front nasals and back nasals;2. Confusion between retroflex final "er" and non-retroflex "e";3. Confusion betweeniian and tin;4. Confusion between lip-rounding final u and non-lip-rounding final I;5. Confusion between in and ian. Targeting at these deviations and errors, this paper has designed reasonable solutions and further proposed five suggestions for the teaching of finals to the Kokang students:1. Set up separate chinese phonetic alphabets courses;2. Using the high level of the Chinese phonetic textbooks.3.Improve the ability to English phonetic teaching for the Chinese teacher;4. Adopt multiple methods to teach finals;5. Implement targeted teaching;6. Utilize modern teaching techniques.
