| The thesis tries to make English teachers in Elementary Schools and Elementary Schoolpupils have a clearer and better understanding of the changes in the International PhoneticAlphabet and let them know the current situation of the phonetic symbol study, especially toElementary English teachers.At the very beginning of this thesis, it analyzed the origin and the development of theInternational Phonetic Alphabet. The International Phonetic Alphabet had experienced threeperiods. The first period was Henry Sweet Period. The second period was Daniel Jones Period.And the third period, the most famous and popularly accepted period was A·C·Gimson Period.It also described the development of the International Phonetic Alphabet in our countryfrom the44-phonetic transcription system to57-phonetic transcription system.Furthermore, it compared the differences among the12thEnglish Pronouncing Dictionary,the13thEnglish Pronouncing Dictionary and the14thEnglish Pronouncing Dictionary. On thebasis of that, it did a research on the application of different International Phonetic Alphabetsystems in Elementary English teaching in our country, which were DJ phonetic transcriptionsystem and Gimson phonetic transcription system.It laid out the questionnaires to one hundred and two students in Elementary schools tofind out the International Phonetic Alphabet system that was used by the English teachers intheir daily English teaching. It also interviewed some English teachers in Elementary Schoolswho were respectively at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of their teaching in orderto analyze the attitudes of the Elementary English teachers towards whether to teach theInternational Phonetic Alphabet during elementary English teaching.It attempts to make the elementary English teachers comprehend and aware of thechanges in the International Phonetic Alphabet in elementary English teaching. That is to say,the International Phonetic Alphabet has changed from the DJ phonetic transcription system toGimson’s phonetic transcription system.As a result, it will probably help the students know the changes in the InternationalPhonetic Alphabet. This research will provide a mostly used International Phonetic Alphabetsystem, the Gimson phonetic transcription system, for the English teachers in ElementarySchools. Moreover, it will help the Elementary School students to recognize the changes inthe International Phonetic Alphabet system so that they can adapt to the changes very well.Furthermore, it will set a good communicative situation between elementary English teachersand learners through making use of the currently used International Phonetic Alphabet system.The most important one is that the English teachers in Elementary Schools will know the significance of International Phonetic Alphabet and as well as whether they should teachstudents in Elementary Schools phonetic symbols or not in elementary English teaching. |
