Participatory teaching is a new type of teaching method starting from the basic spirit and requirement of new curriculum reform, which focuses on transforming "subject oriented" into "student oriented". Participatory teaching method is based on the participation behavior feature and development pattern of students in teaching and learning activities. Meanwhile, it strives to build harmonious, democratic and equal class atmosphere, stimulates learning positiveness and activity of students, and arouses students' individual development needs. Additionally, this method not only makes students participate in the teaching and learning process positively, actively, pleasantly in cognition, emotion, thinking, and action, but also offers students of different levels and character opportunity to participate in actively. Teachers are asked to interactive with students and cultivate their independence in order to assist them learn question, investigate, inquiry. Students can study under the guidance of teachers personally. Ultimately, teachers should respect the students' personality, pay attention to individual difference, meet the different needs of students, create teaching environment which guides students to actively participate in, excite students' enthusiasm of learning, groom students' attitudes and abilities of mastering and applying knowledge, and make each student can be fully developed.This paper elaborates the development background, progress in research, the nature, content and features of participatory teaching method under the guidance of the principles and theories using the target of education reform and curriculum reform as a point of departure. Relying on the middle school geography teaching practice, the author investigates and analyzes application of this method, the question of being as well as the causes in the current senior high schools geography teaching. Results are got though analysis above mentioned. Participatory teaching method has been applied preliminary, but it's still in infancy stage that theory and practice are immature. Teaching form is single. Teaching objective of allowing students to participate is indefinite so that this does not reflect the differences of students. Thus, students do not know how to participate. Enthusiasm and initiative of students are not fully mobilized. To solve these problems, this paper expounds this method's principles, ways and means of application validly. Secondly, the requirements for teachers and teaching effects are revealed. Finally, the author tries to propose system approaches of using participatory teaching method effectively in senior high schools geography teaching. Applications of participatory teaching method have expanded initially, moreover gradually spread and mellows in junior high schools and senior high schools. This will change previous teaching structure, prompt change of students' learning style fundamentally and help students to seek success of self-development. Results of this research will contribute to enrich modern educational pattern. This will promote the basic education curriculum reform and ensure the comprehensive development of students' quality.
