The Republic of China went through a violent social turbulence and historicalevolution in the early of the republic of China. The moral consciousness of thenational were reconstructed under the impact and fusion between Chinese and westernculture. During the same time, the self-cultivate were important moral educationallessons in school. And the textbooks of self-cultivate were the main teaching text usedin the lessons. The content of the lower primary school textbooks of self-cultivate ofthe early of the republic of China have been changed by the impact of educationpolicy and publishing environment. And it has the characteristic of inheritance historyand keeping up with the development of the Times. The changes are the results of thehistorical choice.The research is based on the literature research, text analysis and historicalcomparison as the main research method. And the main objects of the research are thetextbooks which called Cultivation of Chinese of Primary School Volume, it is one ofthe series of The Old Textbooks of the Republic of China (which is based on the seriesof Zhonghua published by Zhonghua Book Company) and The New CultivationTextbooks for the Republic of Lower Primary School (which is based on the series ofThe Republic, published by The Commercial Press). This paper is involving fourterms, the evolution of the textbook, characteristics of the content of the textbook,requirements of self-cultivate in the textbooks and its practical effect. Based on theabove research, we will find some revelation on the writing of the moral educationaltextbooks, the education of self-cultivate in school and personal moral cultivation.The paper is divided into five parts.The introduction is a brief review of the related research done by predecessors.After finishing the previous research, we found that they mainly from three angles tostudy the textbooks, as publications, as teaching materials, as cultural carrier, etc.Researches focused on the evolution of textbook publishing, exploring the civic consciousness of the textbooks, and its value to the moral education modernization inChina. But they care less about the self-cultivate connotation of the textbook.In the first chapter of the paper, comb the evolution of the textbooks in theinfluence of the change of education policies, educational system and publishingpolicies. It can be divided into the emergence of the textbooks which happened beforethe building of the republic of China, the mature period of the textbooks when thestar-up of the republic of China, stagnation period of the textbooks and terminaldecline.In the next part, based on the textbooks mentioned above, reach theself-cultivation in the textbooks at the individual, the family and the community levelsto summary the respective characteristics of the connotation of self-cultivation inthese levels. Personal is the foundation of the family and society self-cultivation.Personal self-cultivation emphasize the all-round development of body and mind,moral introspection and self-reliance. Filial piety is the core of family self-cultivation.Filial piety, respect and love make harmonious family relationship. The Socialself-cultivation emphasizes equality comity, righteousness and integrity.The fourth part is the study of inherent requirement of textbooks for students inteaching practice and its practical effect which were studied. The level of theindividual of teachers, the characteristics of students and other factors cause that theeffect of the textbook was not ideal.In the last part, review the textbook to analyze its enlightenment to the writing ofthe moral educational textbooks, the education of self-cultivate in school and personalmoral cultivation. The inheriting and excellent traditional moral and the spirit offreedom and equality is worth to learn.
