Entering the 21 stcentury, with the developing trend on knowledge economy, the competition between countries more and more concentrates on knowledge and talents.Facing the opportunities and challenges, nearly all countries emphasize on training of high level and high quality talents more than any time in the past. Nearly all countries want to educate innovative and comprehensive talents by reform of basic education,and this is the starting point of our country’s new basic education reform program.Geography as a comprehensive subject, can play an important role on developing students’ comprehensive ability. So, on such background of geography teaching, the teachers should have a wider knowledge on related subjects. Our country has the tradition of “history and geography are of same family”, meaning history and geography are closely related with each other. On this new times background, we should resurvey the new connotation of this tradition. So this paper has a comprehensive study on history and geography.This paper according to the actual teaching situation of high school geography,starting from the theory and practice of uniting history and geography, from different perspectives and points to analyze the meanings and strategies of comprehensive teaching history and geography, in the hope of find an effective way in teaching by uniting geography and history, in order to improve students’ overall and deep understanding of geography and history, and to increase their comprehensive quality.This paper has six major parts.The first part is introduction, introducing the background and meanings of proposing united teaching of history and geography, trying to figure out the history knowledge at geography teaching, stating the study level and status of uniting history and geography in abroad and our own country, and also guides study direction of this paper. The second part learns the status of using history for high school geography teachers by questionnaire, and reach the necessity of studying uniting of history and geography. The third part analyzes the history knowledge in current he people’s education public version “Normal High School Geography Experimental Book”elective 1 and elective 2, hope to give some reference and guidance to vast geography teachers on comprehensive subject teaching. The fourth part, inquires the strategies of uniting history at teaching, and find out following strategies: in introducing newgeography lessons, it can inspire the students’ interest by creating historic circumstances; in teaching process, in helps to comprehending the important and difficult points of geography knowledge by integrating history knowledge; in reviewing lessons, it strengthens the knowledge by uniting history knowledge; in normal lessons, it builds student’s emotions, attitudes and sense of value by combining history knowledge. The fifth part, tries to take the “Population’s Space Change” from first lesson of first part of high school book elective 2 as an example,designs a complete plan of integrating history knowledge in a geography class. The sixth part discusses some points that have to be noticed while integrating history knowledge at geography lessons for teachers. The last part is a conclusion, exposes the inadequate points of this study and some expectations.
