As the punishment implementation in primary school has been one of teaching methods, it means to warn and discipline the student’s misconduct. Author thinks that punishment is to curb the recurrence of student’s misconduct and give the stimulation to students, in order to reduce and even to extinct the frequency of misconduct and correct the misbehavior. In primary school education, when a teacher punishes a student as an auxiliary way, he must control the punishment in a reasonable range, which can’t harm heavily to the student’s body and mentality. The purpose is to curb the student’s misbehavior to happen again, to give some stimulation to the student, and to change the erroneous behavior from the bottom of the student’s heart. In recent years, the rationality of punishment has been widely questioned. This paper studies the rationality of punishment implementation in the current primary education, based on the analysis of combination of education theory and teaching practice. The paper is divided into four parts. The first part as Introduction, is to introduce the events of abuse punishments occurring frequently in the recent years and arousing widespread controversy in the community, and then to define the concept of punishment and analyze the relevant researches in China and abroad. The second part describes the current primary school facing the problems in implicating punishment. The attitudes about punishment polarize. Punishment becomes difficult to measure as equal to the degree of student’s error, which causes to alienate the relationship between teacher and student. The third part discusses the rationality of punishment in primary education mainly from the three theoretical perspectives of psychologies(cognitive psychology and behaviorism psychology), Chinese laws and philosophies(Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy). The fourth part researches the rationality of punishment implementation in the practice of primary education. A reasonable punishment helps the cultivation of rule consciousness and the deterrent effect of punishment, and becomes an adjunct teaching method. Author suggests that an effective communication between teachers and students in primary school will be built; they jointly formulate rules for punishment and execute it in a principle manner.
