The Value Of The Idea Of Humanity Of Mencius For The Civil Morality Education In Modern Times

Among all these traditional Chinese ethnic thesis, humanity is the ever‐lasting one which accompanied and will always accompany human from beginning to end. This thesis sprouted from the proposition put forward by Confucius that people are similar by nature, but become quite different on account of various habituations, While was stated systematically by his successor, Mencius who is named as the “second sage”.Basing on the thinking and theory of humanity of Confucius, Mencius gradually formed the first complete system of the theory of good nature of human in the Chinese history by absorbing reasonable components of Confucius’ idea, and combining with both the current social reality and the life experiences of himself. From the angle of “the goodness of human nature” and “the loss of human nature”, Mencius elaborated that human is endowed with “benevolence”, “righteousness”, “manners”, “wisdom”, and is possible to be moralized and cultivated to become saints with the highest moral standards. His theory provides a positive reference to those who are living in a transitional society and suffering from confusions and conflicts of value, and helps them to get rid of the value orientation that doctrine is absent while dealing blooming, in a result, those people are possible to return to the initial humanity, being strict with themselves and having a deep cognizance of themselves.This paper can be divided into four parts. In the first part, the author mainly discusses the social background and the source of humanity theory of Mencius, which paves the way for the systematical exposition in the second part. And in which part, the author gives a comprehensive exhibition of the said theory from various angles by centering on the theory of good nature of human put forward by Mencius, roughly sketching the outline of his thinking. In the third part, combining with the contents of the humanity theory of Mencius, the author expounds the function of the said theory for the present civil morality education which includes guidance function, practical function and ideal function. Enlightening one’s thinking serves both to guide practice and application, and to develop and expand the spirit of the 18 th congress. In the fourth part, the author depicts the application value at modern times of the said theory in the aspects of domestic virtue, professional ethics and social morality. The paper also expounds the internalization and promotion effect on civil moral cultivation of traditional Chinese culture, which is the value of the said theory put forward thousand years ago in modern times.
