In 2005, all the senior high schools in Guangzhou entered the PE reform phase. PE option teaching is not only the key but also the difficult points of senior high school PE reform. This is not only the requirement on senior high school PE optional teaching by the PE and health curriculum standards but also representing the tendency of the future development.By literature review, questionnaire, interview and statistics, this thesis does a research on the current situation of Guangzhou six senior high school PE optional teaching. The results are as follows:Firstly, PE teachers and students in Guangzhou support PE optional teaching which illustrates that they know this well. However, there are still fewer teachers and students who are unfavorable of this.Secondly, the content of Guangzhou senior high school’s PE optional teaching basically satisfies the students’ needs. Students are content with the optional teaching. The PE optional teaching is basically similar to what the students like. However, some new projects still need to be explored. All the schools have badminton and basketball classes.According to their own situations, each and every school may have football,ping-pong, volleyball, track and field, martial arts, taekwondo, aerobics, swimming, dancesport, shuttlecock, yoga and rugby classes. What the students prefer are ball, basketball, football, ping-pong, taekwondo and roller skating. The badminton is on the top of the preference list, which is, to some degree, linked to Guangzhou’s economy and sports culture.Thirdly, teachers and students have different things to consider.Teachers should take into account more realist factors while satisfying students’ need to the greatest extent. The students hope to cultivate their interests and strengths. Teachers and students in senior high schools have different attitudes towards when PE optional teaching should be taken into use. Teachers maintain that it’s suitable in the second semester of senior 1 while students prefer to have it in the first semester of senior 1. In reality, schools have arrangements according to their own situations. All of them agree to change the project each semester.Fourthly, generally speaking, all the PE teachers in Guangzhou are qualified. Teachers are young and energetic. However, female PE teachers are in small quantity. PE teachers’ specialties are in an unbalanced distribution. What the teachers are good at is different from what the students like. There are more basketball and track and field teachers than badminton teachers.Fifthly, senior high schools in Guangzhou lack fields and equipment. All the existing ones can only meet the traditional teaching’s need.Sixthly, PE optional teaching in Guangzhou is organized in grade rather than class. Teachers have a more reasonable evaluation of the students. Most teachers can evaluate the students from the combined perspective of students’ skills and their attendance, using the way of joining process and the result.Seventhly, the existing problems are lack of new fields and equipment and teachers. The number of students is unreasonable. The teaching management is unscientific.
