Reserch Of Teachers-students’s Space Distance In The University

Human beings mainly use language system and non-language system to communicate with others. The psychologist Albert Melanie pointed out that, 93% of information are delivered by non-language system in the human communication. Non-language information is very important in our communication. Proxemics is a very important part in the non-language system, which means people use physical space distance to deliver information. Therefore, studying the space distance between different people can help us get other’s information while analyzing it, also can help us get a better understanding of each other and express our own ideas, emotions, aspiration and attitude. In a word, it has a very important meaning in interpersonal communication. And this theory can also apply to the relationships between teachers and students.Nowadays, the most important goal of the high-school education is to make a harmonious relationship between teachers & students and a improvement of student’s GPA. In order to achieve this goal, many experts from each field have made much efforts and researches. But I put forward another great idea in this article, which can make that goal easier. And I will explain it from the view of analyses the physic space distance between teachers and students as I showed below:First, I analyses the main theory of space language, individual space & interpersonal space, make it clear that teachers-students ‘s space distance is a physical space which formed while they communicate with each other. And this space is very different from mental distance and social distance. On this basis, according to Edward T.Hall’s research,I divided the high-school relationships into 3 types : fixed-feature space,semi-fixed-feature space and informal space, also he explained that the discipline and affection between teacher & student individual space which in the informal space has a significant influence on the teacher-student space relationship. In addition,I have made a academic discussion from these three aspects as below: the necessity of keeping proper space distance between teacher and students; the feature and classification of the teacher-student space distance which in universities; the levels of measurement between teacher-student space distance.On the second, the article hypothesis that the space distance between teachers and students has made a conspicuous affection on their harmonious and also good for student’s GPA. For instance, in Henan University, we have did a questionnaire survey to know about the situation,influencing factors and the effect of teacher-student relationship and students’ GPA of teacher-student-space –distance. Finally, we have got the results:1) at this moment, the demand of their individual space is still in a medium level; students’ demand is higher; while teacher’s demand is lower. But they were both badly need the space for life、learning and work, on the contrary, less space for communicating with each other. And they will feel bad and then make a respond if their individual was infringed by others. 2)the teachers and students basically has the same idea of their space distance, but it seems a bit of further to students, and a bit of closer in the eyes of teachers. Anyway, that is decided by their own individual demand. The size of the space distance between teachers and students is in the range of “individual space”, which was decided by Edward T.Hall.3)the factors which can affect the teacher-student’s relationship contains: students’ gender、 different characters, different education background and whether they are the students leader or not; teachers’ different ages, different characters, different position, and mood, different majors, even different size of their office; they ways how teachers and students talk to each other and whether they have a good relationship or not. 4) finally we proved the former result that the space distance between teachers and students can make a big influence on their harmonious and can affect student’s GPA.At the end, combine the theory discussion and the practical research, I found the value orientation、theoretical foundation and strategies to build the best space distance between teachers and students. In order to achieve that goal, we have to focus on both inspecting the independence and emphasizing the harmony between teachers and students; meanwhile for the purpose of promoting students’ learning achievement and promoting the harmonious relationship between teachers and students; also make sure that the adjustment of the behavior of teachers and students is our tool. In addition, environmental psychology and proxemics is the theoretical basis.At last I well pointed out the specific ways to construct the best teacher-student’s distance from these three dimensions: fixed-feature space, semi-fixed-feature space and informal space.
