Taken as the outer course to promote media literacy education, family undertakes the tasks of enlightening for preschool children, and is also the beginning ofmedia literacy education for primary children. Presently, children’s exposure to media is mainly fulfilled in family, where is no doubt the primary setting for media habits cultivation. Thus, parents play a very important role in media literacy education as long as it is put forward specifically, randomly and instructively. This paper was targeted to investigate the current conditions and problems concerning family media literacy education for preschool children in Lanzhou, and to provide the corresponding suggestions, as well as the beneficial experience for launching family media literacy education among preschool children.The candidates were children of five to seven years old in five kindergartens in Lanzhou city. Questionnaires and interviews were applied to investigate the current situation. The research found that there were a number of problems as the following: one, preschool children were exposed to a variety of media in long time, but it was obvious that they were less instructed. Two, parents were not deeply aware of the importance of media literacy and were in poor shape of modeling. Three, the value of recreation but not education were made prominent. Four, there were misunderstanding of media literacy among parents and family responsibility was ignored. Five, there lacked social support for preschool media literacy education.Based on the analysis of the problems existing in the current conditions concerning family media literacy education for preschool children in Lanzhou, it is suggested that: the value of media literacy should be propagated among parents, and the role of family be confirmed; parents are expected to cultivate good media using habits; parents should be taught about how to feasibly use electronic media; parents’ educational concept should be upgraded to have a clear understanding of the four aims of family media literacy education for preschool children, and improve parents capability to conduct media literacy education; allied cooperation of family, kindergartens and society are needed to support media literacy education, and it is suggested to put forward the enlightment education of media literacy for preschool children in kindergartens and to promote family media literacy education.
