Reading is one of the four basic contents of English leaning. It is the main approach to foreign language acquisition and an important way for students to familiarize with the outside world. Therefore, reading is an important part of senior high school English teaching. Reading teaching in senior high school is characterized by a big demand for teaching information, content variety. Hence, the traditional method which depends on teacher’s dictation cannot meet the requirements of modern English reading classes. Especially, in traditional English reading classes, teachers use a simple way to introduce the background information that quickly leads to boredom of the students. Students are easily frustrated by unfamiliar or abstract reading materials, which may cause students to lose interest in learning English. Due to poor English and inefficient levels of English reading teachings, poor English reading skill is a prominent phenomenon in our country. Although teachers do explain the abstract and difficult knowledge points repetitively, students still cannot fully understand them. Thus it is urgent and imperative to reform English reading teaching methods. At any stages of the history, education should meet the requirements, educational purposes and teaching methods of that time. During the knowledge economy era, with the widespread use of information and explosive growth of computer technology, multimedia has gradually became a widely used teaching aid. It combines text, image, sound and video image information together. The vivid images and sound can fully activate students’ sensory organs and attract students’ attentions. These will motivate students’ interest in learning and increase their classroom participation. What’s more, with the use of varieties of contents, multimedia aided teaching can present abstract knowledge directly, which is easy for students to understand. All these not only make the English reading class more lively and interesting, but also broaden students’ knowledge, help them improve their learning efficiency and English reading ability. It can compensate for the deficiency of the traditional English reading teaching method. Thus, the application of multimedia assisted teaching in high school English reading classes would become the inevitable. In order to have a further understanding about the application of multimedia assisted teaching in senior high school English reading classes, test and verify whether the multimedia assisted teaching can improve students’ English reading level and increase students’ interest in English reading and classroom participation.
