"Opinions on Further Strengthening the Ability of Head Teachers in the Primary and Middle Schools" (2006) formulated by The Chinese Ministry of Education points out that "head teachers in primary and middle schools comprise the crucial part of the teachers’ team in these schools. They are an important force in implementing the quality-oriented education, as they are the organizers and supervisors of class management and class-building, the leaders in enabling the sound growth of primary and middle school students, the backbone of the ideological and moral education as well as the bridge connecting the parents and the community. Head teachers in primary and middle schools play a critical role in educating students, which is both a science and an art." This document underscores the significance of head teachers’work. It puts forward many new requirements while paying attention to the building of head teachers’team, giving concern to their work, study and life. For the new head teachers who have just engaged in teaching, they face even severer challenges. In educational practices, new head teachers may encounter new problems and have negative feelings like bewilderment, even anxiety and fear. This phenomenon is not rare, for those teachers have to go through the adaptive period. It is therefore one of the important subjects in the current educational practice in regard to how to shorten the time for new head teachers’ adaptation and improve their work.Hence, this research takes new head teachers in Fuzhou primary schools as its research objects and tries to understand the current situation and existing problems of those new head teachers by methods of questionnaire, interview and observation. It aims to discover the factors affecting their adaptation and puts forward the targeted strategies in enhancing their ability to adapt to the new role as the head teachers in primary schools, offering help to smooth their adaptive period.
