Reading is one of the fundamental parts in English teaching in primary schools. However, based on the study of current English reading life of students of higher grades in primary school and reading teaching by the primary school teachers, we find out that students are not so interested in reading and they don’t form good habits for English reading. As for the teachers, they merely apply single ways to teaching, which is not enough for reading input for students. Stories can help attract students’ interests in reading, therefore, we’ve chosen to study stories to extend English reading, both for students and teachers. To improve the abilities for English reading, the study will discuss how to collect stories as extending materials, how to carry out the activities in reading teaching and which ways or methods we can adopt to improve reading efficiency.Firstly, the thesis introduces the background and the significance of the study, and addresses that it has comparatively higher theoretical and practical value. Secondly, based on the researches on story teaching and reading extension both in China and abroad, we plan out the aims, contents and methods for the study. Thirdly, we carry out the activities to extend reading by the form of stories, two parts are included: one is selecting and collecting stories; the other is practicing and applying the stories in reading. Fourthly, we analyze the data collected through a variety of instruments: statistics from the questionnaires and interviews from some of the teachers. At last, according to the conclusion, some of the pedagogical suggestions of using stories to extend reading teaching have been made. At the same time, some of the conclusions and self-reflection are mentioned in order to lay the foundation of further research and extension.
