With the rapid development of multimedia and computer technology, gaming learning and educational games have attracted more and more concern in learning and teaching. The serious games, as new types of learning methods, are gradually acquiring people’s attention nowadays. The serious games are aiming at education by means of entertainment rather than aiming at entertainment itself. Up to now in foreign countries the serious games have been applied to educational projects on medicine, military affairs, school, government, business and so on, which have made very good results. In comparison with the investigation and application of serious games in foreign countries, however, the progress of serious games design in our country is rather slow, and the application range of educational serious games is very narrow. The serious games aiming at popularizing the life knowledge can be of great importance on the improvement of teenagers’ health. Nevertheless, there is few reports on the design and development of such types of serious games.This work has reviewed the literature on serious games in the world, summarized the research on serious games, and analyzed the similarity and difference among gaming learning, gamification and educational games. In this work, the combination and equilibrium point of game nature and educational nature in serious games has been investigated and discussed respectively.According to flow theory, experiential learning theory, constructivism learning theory and Gadamer gaming theory, this work presents the design framework of serious games. Aiming at popularizing the life knowledge on “mutual restrained foods”, the serious game on “mutual restrained foods” has been designed and developed in this work. Particularly, the background in this game is about teenagers’ diets, and the mainline of the game is to select food and form reasonable diets, by which means the game target and learning target are combined together.The game design and development in this work is achieved by using 3ds MAX、Unity3d、Flash and Photoshop. According to the design theory of education system and serious games, the developed game in this work includes two processes: teaching process and evaluation process. The user can make assessment on the game via trial experience, which will be used to analyze and improve the serious game.
