PurposeThis study is to place physiology discipline of a provincial medical university as an example. Starting with the inherited relations, we use pedigree research and social network analysis methods to combine the basic context of academic inheritance and analyze the characteristic of the academic spectrum to explore the development law and refine discipline culture. We also mine traditional disciplines of science to provide decision- making references for the local colleges and universities disc ipline construction and talent cultivation. ObjectsWe treat the physiology academic pedigree of a provincial medical university from 1978 to 2014 as the research object. Sources of InformationThe information about individual physiology teachers and graduate students was collected from the following sources1. Basic medical college of S medical university, department of physiology2. History museum of S medical school3. Graduate Department of S medical university4. Archives of S medical university5. Physiology biographies, Physiology team biography and related booksSource of scientific research achievements were collected from the following sources1. China K nowledge Resource Integrated Database(CNKI)2. The Chinese bio-medical literature database(Sino Med)3. Knowledge service platform of Wan-Fang Data4. VIP journal resource5. Web of Science-TM Methods1. Literature study method2. Pedigree research3. Social network analysis4. Mapping knowledge domains Results1. The subject development through long-term accumulation process and formed three stability research directions. It constitutes the A001 and B001 centered academic lineage. Discipline lead per capita has the study abroad experience and academic roots.2. Each discipline direction has the typical academic leaders who promoted the discipline integration. Academic team structure is inverted pyramid. academic lineage of fault crisis cannot be ignored.3. Academic lineage has trained large quantities of talents, but early talent outgoing active communication. United States tend to be the main route of transmission. After 2002, the propagation path of academic pedigree become broader and involved many domestic teaching and research institutions, mainly in S Province.4. Cardiovascular receptor antibodies and myocardial ischemia / reperfusion injury and its mechanism are a long-term and stable research content. In recent years, researchers focus on learning memory and Alzheimer’s disease etc. The level of domestic reaches first-class academic disciplines.5. Suggestions for further studyIt is important to expand the scope of physiology academic pedigree research. Although this study analyzed academic pedigree relationship, academic spectrum characteristics, spread spectrum and the scientific research development, it was not fully enough to reveal the traditional disciplines. Therefore, it was necessary to adopt other quantifiable information such as scientific research projects, academic works and invention patent etc to tracking academic pedigree. In addition, it was necessary to comparative study of physiology to the same college academic lineage.
