Falling economic growth in China has increased unemployment, which leads a phenomenon that there are more graduate students. Meanwhile China’s official spending on science continues to increase in recent years. The number of people and investment are increasing, but the scientific research quality is less than encouraging, especially for the postgraduates for academic master degree. The graduate students’ enthusiasm and their scientific research ability are related to the development of China’s science, technology and productivity. The results show that: ①Academic masters ego-identity, scientific research engagement and research ability level is not high, needing to improve; ②Ego identity has a significant positive prediction function for scientific research engagement and research ability, in which the fractal dimension, presentself-commitment and the willingness of future self-commitment predicts three dimensions of research engagement; and the willingness of future self-commitment predict five dimensions of research ability; ③Scientific research engagement has a significant positive effect on the research ability, in which the dedication predict the five dimensions of research ability positively;④Scientific research engagement plays partial intermediary role between the ego-identity and research ability. Ego identity’s direct impact on scientific research ability is relatively small, but by the action of research engagement, the impact is larger; ⑤ Under the situation of the generation after 80s’ thinking becoming the major, social functioning well and school training improving, students’ research ability improves; And under the situation of the generation after 90s’ thinking becoming the major, social functioning worsen, school training invariant, the students’ scientific research ability declines.
