Reading is regarded as an important part of English learning, which is a key process of information input. Reading process is not only to acquire key information,but also a procedure which readers apply strategies to get over reading obstacles.English reading teaching aims to help students to acquire overall reading ability by cultivating them to absorb written information. Therefore, it is very important to master correct reading methods and absorb knowledge effectively. Applying reading strategies to get a full understanding of the passage is very necessary and effective strategies would help readers acquire more information. So far, researchers at home and abroad have studied reading strategies a lot, but these strategies focus more on the advanced students in developed regions, few are related to students in rural regions, let alone minority regions.Most students know little about reading strategies in minority regions. The reasons can be ascribed to many factors. The main reason is that most teachers still adopt traditional reading teaching style. Both teachers and students don’t change their minds. For example, teachers focus on language points teaching while students pay more attention to new words and phrases learning. The study aims at studying whethersenior high school students of Grade one in minority regions can use reading strategies consciously and what influence will it bring about after reading strategy use. It takes Huili Ethnic Middle school in Huili County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture as an example. The research objectives are listed in the following part:1. Can students employ reading strategies consciously during reading procedure in minority regions?2. Can students enhance their reading comprehension by applying reading strategies?3. What influence will reading strategies bring to students in their afterwards reading?35 students of Senior Grade one from Huili Ethnic Middle school were recruited in the research. Both qualitative and qualitative were employed in the research. The whole research process lasted for four months and was composed of pre-test and post-test. In the first period, questionnaire copies were handed out to test students’ reading strategy use awareness and the author conducted pre-test by using the final exam papers,collected and analyzed data, and made teaching plans. The author taught students reading strategies and interviewed them purposefully. During this process, the author observed students and took notes. In the second period, the author invited students to do post-test and collected data. Last, the author compared the statistical data and tested whether students have enhanced reading comprehension ability.The study is to have an overall understanding of reading strategies which were employed by senior high school students, it proves the effectiveness of reading strategies used in minority rural regions. According to the pre-test and post-test,questionnaire and interview, the research findings are summarized in the following.Students have awareness of using reading strategies in reading process. Students’ reading comprehension ability has been improved. Students are more confident when dealing with reading comprehension. It also testifies reading strategy aiming at providing empirical evidence and first-hand data for the theories and practices in second language learning. What’s more, it also hopes to arouse teachers’ awareness of strategy use importance, and train students’ ability to use reading strategies.
