Extended reading in senior high school is of vital importance in English learning, through which students acquire abundant information, enrich language knowledge and humanistic knowledge, improve the ability of appreciating British and American literature, and enrich students’ emotional experience. This article makes research on students and teachers’ recognition of extended reading、conduction forms、materials selection、reading skills and so on. It shows that students’ reading frequency is very low; materials selection is random; necessary reading skills and strategies are lacked and while students acquire relevant knowledge, the usage is very poor. Though teachers’ recognition of extended reading is clear, they don’t put enough energy in it; conduction forms of extended reading are not rich; the guidance and track of students are less and short and reasonable and effective assessment is lacked.This article addresses the difficulties appearing in the conduction of extended reading. Making use of literature study、questionnaire survey and interview, two models including extended reading led by teachers and extended reading led by students have been proposed and meanwhile combination of diagnostic evaluation, process evaluation and outcome evaluation to set up diversified evaluation system is suggested in order to improve students’ reading ability and reading interests and finally promote students’ all-round ability of listening、speaking、reading、writing. This research has been proved to be effective and operational to some degree through the analysis of students interview and examination.
