As we all know, the function is the core content of senior high school mathematics, which is the emphasis and difficulty of high school mathematics learning. From the concept of function, to the learning of basic elementary function, the sequence, equations, inequalities, and resolution of limit, derivative and analytic geometry, which involves the knowledge of function and the application of thoughts and methods of mathematics. Therefore, the learning of function affects the learning of whole parts of high school mathematics. In the practical teaching, however, it is found that students do not learn well in function. For example, some students have difficulties in understanding the abstract language of the concept of function, cannot have a good command of defining function from collection, at the same time, can’t keep up with the teachers’ steps; Some students can’t combine the learning of function with other knowledge;others have big problems in the application of function. With time going by, students lose confidence in learning mathematics, which results in anxiety, escape, and fear of mathematics.Based on this, in order to improve the students’ learning effects of function, ways are badly needed to solve these problems. To solve these problems, the learning difficulties of function must be found. Therefore, this study involves various forms of investigations, such as questionnaires and individual interviews. Inductive analysis is carried out on the data, and according to pertinent literature to analyze what the learning difficulties are and find the causes of learning difficulties and to find the factors flaws which cause the learning difficulties. Finally, the point is to take effective measures to change the learning difficulties, to help students improve learning effects.The objects of this study are five classes of students of senior one and senior two. Research methods are based on learning attitudes and interests of function, student’s cognition of the characteristics of function, the feedback of students learning effects, student’s application in the function, the causes of the learning difficulties in the function, etc., have the students to carry on the questionnaire survey and interview survey. Through the analysis of results of the survey, it is found that the learning disabilities of function in our school are mainly divided into three aspects:First, cognitive disorder in understanding of concepts, mathematical symbols recognition, the memory impairment of formulas in the function learning. Second, there are many operational barriers in using mathematics thoughts and methods of function and mistaken usages in application of function. Third, psychological disorder in unclear of study purpose, not confident and disgust in mathematical study. Based on the above three aspects, analyzes the causes of learning difficulties, such as:the function itself factors, the objective reasons of students, the problems in teachers’ teaching. Finally, on the basis of the results of investigations, put forward countermeasures for cognitive disorder, operational disorder and psychological disorder.
