High school education is an important stage where students’ outlook on life, world outlook, and values are formed as well as their abilities to create and practice are developed. In the process of school education, however, for various reasons, even four-star high school also has students who are poor in learning. Students who are poor in learning, as is widely accepted, are social vulnerable groups at school. Their poor performances at school not only affect the teaching quality of teachers and schools, which has violated the principal that education must face all students, but also have a great effect on the family and social harmony. Taking the students who are poor in learning geography at high school for example and based on the questionnaire survey, interview, observation and other methods, this essay is going to analyze and explore the cause of the phenomenon from a variety of aspects like teachers, students, and the subject itself, thus making effective policies to help students transform.The full text is divided into five parts:the first chapter is introduction, which mainly introduces the background, purpose, methods and significance of the paper. The second chapter introduces the research on poor students both at home and abroad and gives a clear definition of the concept of "the students who are poor in learning geography as an optional subject". The third part is the related theory of the research on causes of the students who are poor in learning geography as an optional subject. The paper, based on the samples of Jiangyin No.1High School, researches into the causes of poor students in learning geography at high school through the questionnaire survey, interview, observation and other methods by comparing the different learning strategies between good students and poor students and analyzing the causes of poor students. Many factors account for the difficulty in learning geography, such as the misunderstanding of the subject, learning interest, learning methods, learning habits, as well as the school and teachers. The fourth part put forward the measure of preventing and transforming poor students from three aspects, that is, the education environment, education process and education concept. Many approaches are recommended in the paper, such as improving teachers’ ability, guiding the poor students to set up the correct learning attitude, cultivating the poor students’ interest in learning geography, instructing the poor students to form a scientific learning method, helping the poor students improve the psychological quality and counseling the poor students. The last part is the summary and reflection of the study.
