As one of the basic skills of human, spatial ability plays an important role in the development of human society and scientific research. At the same time, geography plays an irreplaceable role in cultivating students’ spatial ability. And "How to cultivate students’ geospatial ability" has always been one of the focuses of geography educators and junior middle school geography teachers. But now the research about how to improve the junior middle students’ geospatial ability is not systematic and comprehensive. The research on spatial ability of geography discipline needs to be strengthened urgently. This paper is mainly studied by the following methods:first, using the method of literature research. By comparing the literature research at home and abroad about geospatial ability and the present situation of the geography image teaching system, we get a lot of useful information. Second, the questionnaire survey method and interview survey method are used in the study, and the questionnaire survey is conducted on the students from the second middle school in Shijiazhuang city and the first middle school in Zanhuang county. Some teachers of the two middle schools are investigated by means of questionnaire and interview. It is found that geospatial ability is influenced by many factors and overall students’ geospatial ability are low. There is a big difference between teachers in the use of image system to cultivate students’ geospatial ability. Third, this article is based on the theory of multiple intelligences theory, meaningful learning theory and the theory of modern cartography to sum up the strategy of improving students’ geospatial ability space. Fourth, we classify, sum up and count the image system of the latest audit by the people’s education version of junior high school geography textbook, so as to define the meaning, main function, quantity and distribution of each kind of image. Combining with the geography curriculum standard and the geography teaching goal, we use case analysis method to explore the strategies of cultivating students’ geospatial ability based on the characteristics of image system. In this paper, the images of the latest revision of the human education edition of junior middle school geography textbooks are divided into five categories in accordance with the characteristics of the form of expression and application, namely maps, landscape maps, statistics, schematic and composite figure. The map, landscape map, statistical map, sketch map are respectively established the teaching strategy of "clear requirements-determine the location-identify relationships-drawing and mapping", "Read the title-describe characteristics-fix position-analysis the causes-summarize regular", "Read the title-read coordinates-read data-reveal rule", "Fix position-analysis elements-reveal course-summarize regular". Besides we use case analysis method combining with the case to explain. The image system can been better integrate into the classroom teaching, so can we improve the students’ use skills of image system, cultivate students’ geospatial ability, and promote the development of multiple intelligences of junior middle school students.
