The geospatial positioning ability plays an important role in the training of special abilities and regional cognition in geography.As it improves in a spiral,it should be cultivated consistently in the teaching of geography in senior middle schools,of which geography class assignments are an indispensable part and are conducive to improving students' geospatial positioning ability if importance is attached to their design in grades.This study aims to provide a theoretical basis or teaching references for the design of class assignments in grades in the teaching of geospatial positioning in middle schools.In this paper,based on clear connotations of the geospatial positioning ability and geography class assignments,cognitive dimensions of geospatial positioning and geographical thoughts and methods contained in it were determined.In combination with these,the geospatial positioning ability was graded,and the types of classwork based on each ability level were presented,in accordance with academic performance levels specified in Curriculum Standards for Geography(2017 edition revised in 2020).Subsequently,a questionnaire survey of senior middle school students' current geospatial positioning ability was conducted,to find the following problems:(1)Some students still could not reach the required grades;(2)They failed to gain an accurate focus when describing geographical positions,and inaccurate expressions hindered their progress into higher grades;(3)They had a relatively weak analytical ability,and followed the same patterns in analysis without orderliness on a spatial scale.On this basis,this paper presented the principles of spatiality,progression,exemplification and effectiveness to be followed in the design of class assignments in grades to improve the geospatial positioning ability,as well as relevant design strategies:(1)Clarify vertical levels of training to highlight training objectives in stages;(2)Effectively integrate the content of teaching to improve students' level of understanding;(3)Accurately select the starting point of assignment design,to form development stages of the ability;(4)Develop students' abilities thinking based on real scenarios.Finally,with the strategies,a case of designing class assignments in grades was provided based on the scenario of comparing the development of Singapore and Papua New Guinea.
