| Preparing learners to participate in the informational and global society is one of requirements for future education. In this society, communication and cooperation play a significant part and they also become a part of their social life. A large amount of research done has proved that the more chances the learners have to use English in meaningful situation, the better their English will be. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether the autonomous, cooperative and exploratory teaching and learning mode can help make the English class more effective or not.Autonomous, cooperative and exploratory learning refers to the learning based on exploration which attaches great importance to problem-solving and self-inquiry. It places students into the language learning context of the conversation and cooperation, which aims to cultivate students’ independent learning ability, spirit of exploration and innovation. The research aims to adopt autonomous, cooperative and exploratory teaching and learning mode and applies it to English teaching, hoping that it would be effective to change the current situation in English teaching in senior high school.The research adopts the method of experiment. 114 subjects are from two parallel classes in Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School. The two classes serve as experimental class and control class separately. And both of them are taught under the same teacher who is the researcher. The experimental class is taught under the guidance of autonomous, cooperative and exploratory teaching and learning mode, while the control class is taught with the traditional method. The instruments include questionnaires, tests and interviews. And the research questions are as follows: 1. Can the students study English autonomously in the autonomous, cooperative and exploratory teaching and learning mode? 2. Can they cooperate well when learning English in this mode? 3. Are the students able to explore in English study in this mode? 4. What are the effects of this mode on students’ performance in English tests?The result of the research proves that with the training of autonomous, cooperative and exploratory teaching and learning mode, students’ interests in learning English have been motivated greatly. Students in the experimental class perform better in the tests than students in the control class. Besides, students are able to do autonomous learning. They are able to cooperate and explore well when learning English.Based on the results of the research, some suggestions have been made for future English teaching: The autonomous, cooperative and exploratory teaching and learning mode can be applied to English learning practice so as to stimulate students’ interest in English learning. It is of great necessity for teachers to create an active atmosphere for students in the English teaching. The approach to English teaching should be improved on the basis of autonomous, cooperative and exploratory teaching and learning mode. |
