Discussion On The Intervention Of Social Work Into Christian Social Services

From a historical perspective,the modern social work derived from philanthropy of Christianity.Then,it gradually separated from the Christian and developed as a professional specialty.At the same time,Christianity always actively carries out the public service activities in the field of social life,which can be considered as one of the important forces to build a harmonious society in our country.We can describe the specific situation of China’s Christian social service activities,and discuss the intervention of social work into Christian social services.This is not only conducive to the development of Christian social services,but also it can expand the scope of the social work practice in reality,enrich the practical experience of our social work,and promote the localization of social work.Firstly,by carding the literature,this article briefly outlined historical relationship between social work and Christianity. Afterwards,we researched on social service activities(including the English corner, the psychological counseling and the hospice project) of a Christian church in Changsha.Through the method of grounded theory,this article attempted to analyze Christian social services with three-level coding of participant observation notes of these service activities and interview contents of volunteers and audiences.According to three types of axial coding which can reflect the actual situation,we know Christian social services, by volunteers who have relevant scientific or professional knowledge looking a certain ethical value as orientation and using some activity forms which are similar to social work methods,such as a way similar to casework, provide services for someone in need,and achieve some related self-reliance effects.So,in a period of selective coding,we analyzed, categorized and concluded the notion of“resemblance to social work”,thus,the paper shows associations and differences between social work and Christian social services.Finally,this paper discussed the intervention of social work in Christian social services,and gave some suggestions. We analyzed the compatibility and feasibility on intervention of social work in Christian social services.Then,according to the actual situation that Christian social services undertake, we talked about the key elements of intervention,including clear role of intervention,respecting faith,emphasizing methods and so on.Such discussion is not only conducive to playing an active role and social function of Chinese Christian social services,but also opening up new directions in the future research of social work.
