A Student Engagement Study In The Course Of College Ideological And Political Theory

As the main channel and position of the ideological and political education for the college student, ideological and political theory course has been widely concerned by the leader and teacher in the Ideological and political education field. With the introduction of the concept of ’student engagement’ in recent years, domestic people put more and more attention on it, and some domestic scholars also began to put this concept into the study of ideological and political education. Devoting to the study of the student engagement on the ideological and political theory course, not only can adhere to the’Take the Student As the Center’teaching philosophy, but also can improve the quality of the ideological and political education in colleges. In order to inquiry the status quo of student engagement on the ideological and political theory course and its influencing factors, we adopted qualitative research methods, used the Grounded Theory methodology, and made in-depth interviews with 24 students based on the preliminary interview of many college students. We got the firsthand materials of their status and influencing factors of the student engagement on the ideological and political theory course. Then we used the qualitative analysis software— Nvivo10 to encode and analyze the interview materials, and constructed the theoretical analysis model of influencing factors of the student engagement on ideological and political theory course.By analyzing the status quo of the student engagement, such as behavior engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement, we find that the college students is very lack of initiative and enthusiasm in studying the ideological and political theory course. This phenomenon is obvious, especially on their behavioral engagement——no preparation for pre-class, behaving negatively and lazily in class, and no review after the class. All of these phenomenon show that college students have a low input on studying the ideological and political theory course.Based on the above situation, we interviewed the interviewers about the cause of this situation, and summarized three main factors——cognitive factors, emotional factors and environmental factors. Cognitive factors, as college students original experience, play a fundamental role in learning ideological and political theory course. Emotional factors mainly include cognitive drive, social drive and students’ meta-cognitive. Cognitive drive is refers to the individual psychological elements of students’ interest, attitude, and motivation in learning ideological and political theory course. Social drive is those significant people in the process of learning ideological and political theory course, such as parents, teachers, and classmates, etc. And the students’ meta-cognitive ability is namely the students’ ability of self-management and the skills of time management. Environmental factors is also have a great recessive influence on the student engagement. But due to individual differences, these three factors’ influence for each individual is different. By asking the interviewers to sort the factors, we found that students’ cognitive drive (namely learning attitude and learning interest) and the students’ original experience in learning ideological theory course is the biggest influence factors, next is the significant others——the teachers of ideological and political theory course, the last is the impact of learning surroundings.Based on the in-depth analysis of influence factors, and with reference to the ranking of the sorted factors, we put forward some pertinence suggestions to improve the student engagement on ideological and political theory course. First of all, we should pay more attention to the cultivation of students’non-intelligence factors, correct their learning attitude, and improve their learning interest on this course. In other words, we should pay close attention to students’subjective role, enhance their learning enthusiasm and initiative. Secondly, the course teachers should also correct their teaching attitude, improve their personal charm, explore more diversified teaching method, and seek a scientific and reasonable evaluation method, to improve the quality of the teaching of the course. Finally, in terms of environmental optimization, university, society, and country should coordinate with each other as a whole, to build a cultural environment in favor of ideological and political theory course teaching. Only in the resultant force,can we build a good cultural environment for the course teaching, and can we improve the student engagement on the ideological and political theory course.
