China is a country of poetry. Ancient poetry is a wonderful work throughout China for five thousand years in the traditional culture of China. Through learning ancient poetry, students can improve the cognition of traditional culture, develop the ability to sense the language and inspire the students’imaginal thinking, and at the same time they can obtain aesthetic experience and uplift the mind and the spirit. Therefore, ancient poetry teaching plays an important part in Chinese teaching. In 2003, "ordinary high school language curriculum standard (experiment)" issued by the Ministry of Education broke the traditional single curriculum. According to this policy, the Chinese lessons in high school are divided into required courses and elective courses. The goal of poetry teaching in elective courses is to cultivate a strong interest in the appreciating poetry and prose works, enrich our emotional world, develop a healthy and noble aesthetic taste and improve literary accomplishment.The elective courses can supplement and expand the required courses. The ancient poetry in the latter can foster the students" ability to appreciate aesthetics and improve of the standard of enjoying it. In the background of exam-oriented education, there’re many problems to settle as for the teaching of ancient poetry in recent situation, which isn’t optimistic. This article can be divided into three chapters, which discourse the problems, the causes and the measures of how to make full use of teaching ancient poems in the elective courses. First, it analysises the present situation and the purpose about the required and elective courses of the edition published by the People’s Education Publishing House in senior middle school. Based on the current state of selecting ancient poems and by interviewing the students and teachers, we find that teachers usually attach more importance to the teaching of ancient poetry in required courses than elective courses, ignore the educational theory that should focus on students and teach the ancient poetry in the way to learn writings in classical Chinese. The students aren’t interested in the learning of ancient poetry in elective courses, the single evaluation methods and all of these have an influence on the learning of it among students. Teachers are weak in the understanding of a new curriculum and elective courses have low cultural attainments, and ignore the special characteristic of ancient poetry. On the other hand, the students aren’t interested in ancient poetry and can’t master a good way to learn either, only concerning college entrance exam. All the above result in the problem of ancient poetry in elective courses. Finally, the measures are the following:we should pay more attention to elective courses, increase the teaching periods, integrate required and elective courses, base the teaching on the poems, advocate an independent cooperative and explorative method and organize activities that are related to ancient poetry. The subject and rules for assessment should be varied and analysis it according to the living examples during teaching. All the efforts will be beneficial to improve the students’interest in learning ancient poetry, develop their ability to explore and enhance the accomplishment for learning Chinese.
