Like any other natural sciences, biology is also experimental science in essence. Experimental science gives priority to inquiry activity, and focuses on the development and elevation of students’ ability, with experimental teaching as its main teaching form. Therefore, experimental teaching plays a very important role in the teaching of biology in middle schools. It has been tens years since Tianjin implemented the new curriculum reform among its junior middles schools, what about the present situation of experimental teaching? What about the teaching condition? And what about the cognitive condition of the teachers and students? In order to know the present situation of experimental teaching in Tianjin, finds out existing problems, and provide reliable theoretical and realistic bases for implementing experimental teaching, this survey is carried out. The research is in a form of questionnaire. The objects are 93 biology teachers and laboratory technicians from 18 middle schools in Tianjin, and 450 second year students in Tianjin’s junior middle schools, with 25 students selected randomly from each school. Meanwhile, the author has done on-the-spot investigation at the above-mentioned schools, and interviewed some headmasters, biology teachers and students of some schools.Based on the results of questionnaire and interviews, the author finds that the opening of biological experiment in Tianjin’s junior middle schools is not optimistic. The problems are the laboratory infrastructure need to be improved, the attitude of schools need to be changed, the construction of teaching resources need to be strengthened, students’ subject consciousness need to be strengthened and their attitude toward study need to be changed, and the evaluation system need to be weighed and considered. Based on the real situation, the author puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions:perfecting the construction and management of laboratory; making potential local resources into full play, combining it with the utilization of the existing resources, and implementing experimental teaching; changing people’s ideas and improving people’s understanding of biology experiment teaching; strengthening the construction of teaching resources; and establishing a complete scientific evaluation system.The study mainly deals with the status quo of the experiment teaching of biology in Tianjin’s junior middle schools, finds out the existing problems in teaching, and puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions. It is hoped that the study is of reference value and importance to the development of experimental teaching.
