In recent years, the number of undergraduates studying in Hong Kong universities from Mainland China is increasing. Many mainland top scorers even abandoned Peking University, Tsinghua University, and chose to study in Hong Kong universities. However, reports about undergraduates from Mainland China couldn’t adapt well in learning in Hong Kong universities appeared frequently. The issue of the learning adaptation of undergraduates in Hong Kong universities from Mainland China has become increasingly prominent and in urgent need of due attention. However, the relevant research data is very limited. So this study chose the issue which is important but lack of attention. The study focuses on the learning experience of undergraduates in Hong Kong Universities from Mainland China, trying to answer the questions like:How do the undergraduates from Mainland China adapt the learning in Hong Kong universities. It focuses on the following questions:What difficulties and challenges will they encounter in their learning in Hong Kong universities? Why would they encounter these difficulties and challenges? How do they deal with these difficulties and challenges? How will the learning experience in Hong Kong universities influence them? The learning adaptation experience of undergraduates in Hong Kong universities from Mainland China is dynamic, complex and multi-faceted. The study is trying to explore the inner worlds of the study objects and understand their depth, vivid and comprehensive learning adaptation experience by their individual stories. So the study chose qualitative research methods and used a variety of methods which including literature, depth interview and participant observation to collect data. And it used Nvivo qualitative analysis software for data collecting by open coding and thematic coding, on this basis, analyzing the information and refining conclusions. The study results show that:1.The learning adaptation process in Hong Kong universities of undergraduates from Mainland China is bittersweet flavors and taste. They constantly adjusted themselves and gained growth in setbacks and challenges. 2.The undergraduates from Mainland China encountered a variety of difficulties and challenges learning in Hong Kong universities, which are seven main areas:language problems; learning objectives; teaching methods; learning methods; learning evaluation; student-student relationship; teacher-student relationship.3. The undergraduates from Mainland China adopted different coping strategies to solve different difficulties at different stages of learning adaptation, mainly including two kinds:self-regulation and asking for help.4. The learning experience of undergraduates in Hong Kong universities from Mainland China affected them positively and profoundly. It makes them more wide-field and tolerant; more independent and autonomous; more positive and open-minded; more clear and confirmed. The study conclusion is:The tortuous learning adaptation experiences in Hong Kong universities of undergraduates from Mainland China show that the most prominent education problem of them is the lack of autonomy, which appears in three respects:lack of authenticity; lack of initiative and lack of independence. Meanwhile, the learning adaptation difficulties of them indirectly reflect the longstanding bottleneck or a short board of primary and secondary education of Mainland China. The primary and secondary education of Mainland China inhibits the development of students’ autonomy in the long process of education. It further confirms that the education theory calling for "developing the subjectivity of students" has a solid factual basis, and also proves that the educational practices for "promoting the development of students’ autonomy" are important and urgent.
