Among the peasants, many are the middle-aged and the elderly, who, due to various reasons, are in a particular phase in their lives; and having been spending a major part of their life in the countryside, regular and customary ways of life, thinking, consumption, and psychology have been established. And thus, they find it difficult to adapt themselves to changes such as the loss of their farmland, the migration from the countryside to cities, and the identity transformation. Due to the restraints of various factors and conditions, they can not enjoy such remuneration and social security as the urban residents have been enjoying. For them, what is lost is not only their farmland, but also their livelihood and insurance for life, as they are having growing concern about their pension. In this thesis, whose research methodology combines both structured interview and unstructured interview, the author interviewed 30 aged people who dwell in Community Q, Shapingba District, Chongqing City. She depicted the current status of these elderly, who have lost their farmland, from the perspectives of basic conditions, living conditions, source of pension, and ways to provide for old age, and then she moves on to discuss the predicaments they face. Through the research, the author found that these elderly face three major economic predicaments, namely, the growing expense of livelihood, and the limitation of filial financial aid; and four major predicaments in their daily life, namely, the shortage in daily care from their offspring, the limitation of aid from the neighborhood, the unsatisfactory awareness against theft and defraud, and the high frequency of accidents due to lack of security. Psychologically, they face predicaments such as lack for familial care, tthe difficult of role transition, pessimistic about life. In health care, they confront predicaments of the difficulty and high expense for medical treatment, worsening physical condition, lack of knowledge of daily health care. And, they also suffer from problems such as imperfection of recreational facilities, low social participation, and the addiction to gambling. In attempt to solve these problems, the author proposed concrete measures and suggestion and analyzed the advantages of social intervention from the aspects of professional values and measures.
