In this open and efficient information society, geographic information technology spreads to the social production and many aspects of life. To get some knowledge and skills related to geographic information technologies and have some basic geographic literacy and capability, it’s an essential requirement for every citizen of this era presented. As high school geography teaching is an important factor for the basic education of the public to further improve the quality, geographic information technology for the introduction of Middle School Geography Teaching become an inevitable trend. In 2003, the Ministry of Education promulgated the "ordinary high school geography curriculum standards (experimental)", requires students to master the content of a geographic information technologies clearly.Geographic information technology encompasses many aspects, which, GIS as an important part, because of its unique value as a tool for introducing geography teaching practice has extraordinary significance. But now, the study of GIS Application in Geography Teaching Activities studys more in theory than practical application. Theoretical research is thorough, and the actual research is still lacking. Thus, in reference to a number of outstanding domestic and foreign literature, based on the combination of the author’s knowledge, understanding and practice, the theme of this paper is to determine the application of GIS in Geography Teaching Practice.This paper consists of five main parts. The first part is an introduction, mainly introduces the development process of GIS, GIS research status at home and abroad in the geography teaching analysis, feasibility analysis GIS in the geography teaching application,Necessity of GIS in the geography teaching application, GIS technology in geography teaching advantages, significance and direction of paper adopts research methods and ideas. The role and significance of the second part geography student literacy training under the geographical information technology, introduces the connotation of the concept of geographic information technology and geography teaching in secondary schools and the significance of the status quo, geographic literacy, geographic information technology to develop the geographic literacy, geographic information technology to promote geographic literacy formation manifested. The third part is to introduce the Google Earth application in geography teaching, and a brief description of the method of operation of the software Google Earth, using Google Earth geo necessity of teaching analysis, Google Earth application examples in geography teaching inquiry and so on. The fourth part is based on GIS 3D visualization contour map discrimination, specifically to explain the use of GIS for geography teaching content of the "topography", "contour", etc. Finally, three-dimensional visualization using ArcGIS contour. The last part is the conclusion, summarizes the results of this research, as well as prospects for the future.
