This research report chose GAN Shengxi’s family, the typical peasant household at Wuzhuhu village, Hanshou, Hunan Province, as the study object and clarified the marriage sense and its process of generations of GAN’s family across the evolution from tradition to modern times. Based on which, the dissertation clarified characteristics of generations in economy, society, politics and culture and the institutional changes, which revealled the historical vicissitudes of families in the whole Wuzhuhu village and the huge amount of social risks and challenges, thus formulating the increasingly urgent internal need for state governance.According to the research report, household has always been serving as the unit of economy, politics and society, the basic operation unit and interests unit as well in traditional China, within which farmers finish most of the chores. Farmers are strongly attached to family rather than to external society. While intervation of state and market which coming along with changing times weakens the attachment of the individual to family. Structure of family rights began to change and the individual rights spread, which lead to changes of unshared housing institution and also propose new demand for rural governance. Marriage system, as a part of household system, also reflects the transformation of society. Traditional marriage is dependent on family rather than the individual, which comes for the continuity of a clan and the increase of household workforce. Meanwhile, the accomplishment of the whole marriage process is also attached to the family. The individual alone cannot achieve that. However, with the development of society, family-centered marriage began to change towards individualization and nationalization. Personal right of marriage began to be respected and not to be greatly dependent on family. In addition, marriage began to be involved with state power with rising laws consciousness of farmers. For instance, marriage certificate with legal force now serves as the key to marriage. In the changing process of marriage, the dissertation reveals that changes of the individual financial capacity serves as the endogenous power of household system changes. State power functions as the external factor of household system changes and the ternary mode of the individual, the household and the state also features the influencing pattern of it. The research report further points out that the government is expected to play a part in the process of rural youth marriages, such as legislation and institutional ensurance in legal dimension. The government is also supposed to offer active guidance for social organizations to take actual care of migrant workers physically and psylogically, to resolve the survival problem of migrant workers and to eradicate their worries about marriage, making them pursuing love and marriage with ease and freedom, thus promoting the social stability of society.
