It is a fact that a large number of new citizens’ children have been admitted into the local public junior high schools, and huge differences between students have caused big problems for Chinese reading teaching in such school. Concerning the differences and for solving the problem, this thesis emphasizes on differentiated teaching, and by doing so,four methods are used for practice, which are face-to-face interview, literature analysis, behavior observation and questionnaire investigation. However, the traditional values in Chinese culture, parents’ high expectation for their children and the social environment make it really difficult to put differentiated teaching into effect. On the premise of not changing the environment, this thesis suggests that differentiated teaching should be carried out by the teaching method called “base+self-help” when it refers to Chinese reading teaching in junior high schools. “base+self-help” method is based on the conditions that, Chinese language teachers should strengthen theoretical studies, know well about students, and improve teaching abilities. In specific,by adjusting the teaching contents, teaching objectives, teaching methods, homework assignments and assessment mechanism...etc.,teachers on one hand should make sure that every student gain a solid foundation; on the other hand teachers should make sure that different student develop their different abilities in individual feeling, understanding, appreciation and evaluation of the literature text. Moreover, science, development and innovation should be mentioned and emphasized when using the teaching method of differentiated teaching.
