The large class teaching is the general phenomenon of current basic education in China, which mainly results for the lack of education resources and the uneven distribution of education resources. What’s more, although the rural urbanization has accelerated the process of urban construction and development, the phenomenon of the large class becomes more common. That’s because the children, whose parents are migrant workers, non-local businessmen or urbanized local residents, they flood into the city to receive education, which leads to the expansion of the class. The number of students of each class in many primary schools has exceeded according to related regulation, which proclaims that the number of each class should not be more than 45 students. But, actually the number of the students in many primary schools is more than 50students, even in some primary schools; each class has more than 60,70 or 100 students. Hence, the phenomenon of the large class in the city is common.Based on the current situation of the large class in the city’s primary schools, this thesis describes the phenomenon of the large class and analyzes the reasons for the large class. The paper is based on 140 students’ questionnaires from two different classes which come from two different primary schools. Besides the survey is compared and analyzed from the following aspects:the attention students got from the teachers, the evaluation of students, discipline in the classroom, learning environment, the students’ performance in class and the students’ desire to learn. On the basis of the data analysis, six English teachers in a primary school and three junior students were interviewed; and the result shows that the adverse effect on the students and the teacher is apparent.Based on the result and the comparison between the two classes, some significant differences are found in the aspects of the attention students got from teachers, discipline in the classroom, and students’ performance in class. For example, the students can’t get enough attention from the teachers, discipline in class can’t be guaranteed, the learning environment is poor, and the students are not active in learning activities. All the things mentioned above have a bad effect on the students’ English learning interest and confidence. Besides, large class teaching also has influence on the teachers. The teachers have heavy workload and are under great pressure, which will lead to a tense relationship between teachers and students’ parents and affect the teachers’ professional identity and well-being.Finally, some suggestions are given from the following factors:the administrative department of education, schools and English teachers. The administrative department is expected to distribute the education resources more reasonably; the schools should control the number of the students and reduce English teachers’ teaching classes. Meanwhile, some feasible suggestion to English teachers in primary schools are given: integration of teaching materials, real life scenarios into the classroom, small panel for examination and assessment of classroom management style, one-to-one assistance teaching after school, effective use of online homework and joint management between teachers and students’ parents.
