In today’s fast-developing society, the work of faculty in higher education institutions is busier, they should take some centralized time to update themselves, through continuous learning, and constantly improve their teaching and scientific research ability to adapt to the social development of the situation. Sabbatical leave is a faculty training system, it provides a platform for faculty in higher education institutions to independently carry out scientific research and academic activities, is the objective need of faculty’s management system in higher education, and it is a beneficial supplement to the faculty’s management system in higher education, it could meet the subjective needs of the professional development of faculty, it can provide faculty specializing time in research and do academic activities, to promote update their knowledge and the accumulation, to obtain a high level of academic achievements, to update teaching methods, to promote the faculty’s academic level improved.This thesis references the achievement need theory of McClelland, an American social psychologist, directed towards how to meet the need of achievement of individual faculty, how to improve the performance of organization and the academic level of faculty, how to help faculty effectively use sabbatical leave, etc., as faculty are the main part, through the analyzing of sabbatical leave in China and American, investigating and interviewing 14 faculty and managers in 5 universities in China, finds out their experience, opinions and expectations on sabbatical, in-depth analysis of typical cases of the sabbatical leave in China and American, investigating the sabbatical leave as one of the measures to improve faculty’s need for achievement. Directed towards the existing problems of execution and construction, analyzes the factors which impact faculty to execute the sabbatical leave, to put forward countermeasures of the construction of faculty sabbatical leave in higher education institutions combined with Chinese actual situation.This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter I exordium discusses topics and significance,including topics basis and problems, research significance, research status at home and abroad, research content, and key issues to be addressed, and identifies framework of the thesis. Chapter II briefly introduces the concepts of sabbatical leave, need and motivation, introduces and explains the applicableness of the theoretical foundation in the research. Chapter III introduces the overview of sabbatical leave in Chinese higher education institutions, comparative analyzes of the content of sabbatical leave of nine universities. Chapter IV introduces the overview of sabbatical leave in American, comparative analyzes of the sabbatical leave in China and American. Through interviewing to depth understanding the faculty’s sabbatical leave process and experience about sabbatical leave who have used sabbatical leave, the faculty who haven’t used sabbatical leave and administrators’ opinion about sabbatical leave in China, summarizes the existing problems in construction and execution of sabbatical leave. Chapter V references the achievement need theory, summarizing and analyzing framework of content and motivators of faculty sabbatical leave, based on the development orientation of different higher education institutions, combined with the actual situation of higher education institutions and the need of faculty, proposes countermeasures of the construction of sabbatical leave in terms of purpose, content and execution, etc.
