Sabbatical leave was originated in the Harvard University in 1880. After developing for more than a century,it has become an very important faculty training system in the United States. It has proved that faculty sabbatical leaves in the United States has played a very important role in raising the morales of faculty and improving teaching standards and promoting scientific innovation and creating the world-class university.The 21st century is an era of knowledge, the speed of change increasing rapidly is the obvious characteristics of this information socity,social change and knowledge growth has a decisive influence on human existence. Faculty urgently need to change the aging knowledge and know about the latest technology and culture in order to update and expand their knowledge and skills,in this way,they can implementate their responsibilities effectively. However,with higher education from elite to mass transition,heavy tasks and burnout of teaching for many years made faculty have no time and energy to update their knowledge and learn cutting-edge issures and latest academic trends,which affect faculty ability development of academic innovation.This article is divided into five parts,according to the main line"Why do we have to establish faculty sabbatical leaves system"and"How do we establish faculty sabbatical leaves system",following the logical order"to raise problems-to analyze problems-to solve questions",using documentary research method,comparative research method and historical research method to analyze the faculty sabbatical leaves system in both China and the USA, some specific faculty sabbatical leaves measures like funding protection mechanism,incentive mechanism,assessment mechanism etc ,would be proposed to be established in China.The first chapter describes the origins of this thesis , research significance, research ideas and research methods.It also analayze sabbatical leaves systems at home and abroad and find out the strengths and weaknesses of those sabbatical leaves systems.The second chapter is about some concepts and theoretical foundation of faculty sabbatical leaves in the universities ,which including the concepts of faculty and sabbatical leaves, the faculty career cycle theory and the theory of professional development of faculty.The third chapter describes the basic profiles of sabbatical leaves in China. Try to find out the reasons by analyzing the sabbatical leaves system in detail.The fourth chapter introduces the sabbatical leaves system in American universities and the enlightenment of how to establish and develop the sabbatical leaves system in our universities.The fifth chapter tries to solve the serious problems in our faculty sabbatical leaves system .By learning the U.S. sabbatical leaves system,the specific sabbatical leaves system in our universities can be established.Finally, try to make conclusions by summing up the contents of this paper and look forward to researching the sabbatical leaves system deeply and widely.
